Domaine Coste-Caumartin
As always with good Burgundies history permeates the wines. This Domaine
goes back over a century and is now run by Jerome Sordet. The cellars
are situated in Pommard village and date from the beginning of the 17th
century.
Monsieur Sordet owns several parcels of land from which he sources the
majority of his grapes. He has four major holdings. La Rue au Port,
which is at the foot of the slope below the village, has been under
vine for several centuries and was owned by the Priory of St. Etienne
of Beaune. These vines provide the grapes for the Domaine's Pommard
Village wines.
The second comprises a parcel of land in Les Fremiers in South
West Pommard on the borders of Volnay, from which this premier cru is
sourced. In the 14th century the Abbey de Maizière owned these
vineyards. Proximity to Volnay gives the wines a combination of the
firmness and elegance of Pommard with the finesse of Volnay.
The third is a 1.83-hectare plot in Les Boucherottes, another
premier cru, north east of Pommard adjacent to Beaune. It is surrounded
to the south and east by Petits Epinots. This has been in the family
for over a century.
The final important vineyard is a parcel in Les Chouacheux, a
Beaune premier cru. This is a new acquisition of Coste-Caumartin and
the first vintage was 1995, the vines are between 30 and 55 years old.
Monsieur Sordet nurtures the vines; the grapes are hand picked with
harvest taking place at the optimum time to produce rich, well-structured
wines.
The wines are made in the traditional manner with a pre- and post-fermentation
maceration. There is foot treading of the premier cru wines. This produces
well-structured, firm wines, which are extremely well balanced. They
are aged in the domaine's cellars for 18 months in oak barrels, 15%
of which are new.
Monsieur Sordet makes outstanding wines in the traditional Burgundian
style they are almost opaque in colour, have rich fruit, are well structured,
firm and provide an intense, persistent experience in the mouth. Depending
upon the vintage the premier cru wines are at their best in 8 to 12
years after the vintage. They will, however, mature gracefully for upwards
of 15 years. Les Fremiers has wonderful finesse, Les Boucherottes
is awesomely concentrated, full bodied and intense, the Chouacheux
is robust with vibrant fruit. Our tasting shows that the 97's are maturing
faster than the 96,s the 98,s are huge and robust all promising excellent
balance. We have not dared taste the 99's and the 2000 since our initial
tasting whilst the wines were still in barrel.
